Edwards Creative was engaged to design an immersive, interactive children’s exhibit at the German American Heritage Center, aimed at bringing the story of German immigration to life. The exhibit begins with a hands-on experience at a ticket counter where children receive and stamp their one-way ticket, symbolizing the start of a journey to the United States. Through engaging activities, young visitors explore the clothing immigrants wore, items commonly packed in their luggage, and the diverse methods of travel used to reach America. These interactive components provide a tactile, engaging way for children to connect with history.
The exhibit also includes a digital interactive featuring “Travey” the suitcase, who leads children through animated stories about 19th-century to modern-day modes of transportation. By moving Travey, children trigger animations that detail each travel option, offering a dynamic learning experience. Portholes along the exhibit walls showcase visual depictions of prominent U.S. ports, giving kids a glimpse of their ancestors’ first views of America. A magnetic wardrobe invites children to dress dolls in period-appropriate clothing, immersing them further in the lives of young immigrants and providing an accessible introduction to historical context through play and exploration.
